Edmonds & Slatter Strengthens Dry Eye Care with New Imaging Technology

Edmonds & Slatter Opticians has invested in another advanced piece of technology, further enhancing our ability to diagnose and manage dry eye conditions.

With the increasing use of digital devices, dry eye symptoms have become more common than ever. One of the leading causes is Meibomian Gland Dysfunction (MGD), a condition where the glands along the eyelids become blocked. These tiny glands, located just behind the lashes, play a vital role in producing the oily layer of the tear film. When they are not functioning properly, tears can evaporate too quickly, leading to dryness, irritation, and discomfort.

Our newest addition, a portable imaging device called a meibographer, is designed to capture high-quality images of the meibomian glands. This allows our optometrists to accurately assess gland health, monitor changes over time, and offer tailored advice and treatment plans for each patient.

The images produced provide a detailed view of the glands within the eyelids. Healthy glands typically appear as numerous, well-defined, straight lines. In contrast, glands that appear irregular, shortened, or sparse may indicate dysfunction.

This new technology forms part of our ongoing commitment to investing in the very best tools to support patient care. It enables us to detect issues earlier, explain conditions more clearly, and guide patients towards more effective management of dry eye.If you are experiencing symptoms such as dryness, irritation, or tired eyes, our dedicated Dry Eye Clinics are here to help.
